Over the past two years I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know and work with a lot of great horsemen and women as the Executive Director of the HBPA. It confirmed what I learned as a boy hanging around Northlands Park, that the men and women who share the love of horses and a passion for racing are some of the finest people you’d hope to meet.

It’s an exciting time in Alberta racing for sure.  And it’s humbling, to say the least, to think back on all of the challenges we’ve faced over the last 10 years. But with our recent return to Calgary and with a brand new facility ready to open in Edmonton with the Century Mile, we’ve come through it all and find ourselves with a great opportunity laying ahead of us.  Whatever start-up pains we may encounter over the next months, keep in mind that other jurisdictions will surely be jealous of all of our newness.  There aren’t many new facilities being built in North America and we find ourselves with two.

As we’ve seen of late, Horse Racing is experiencing a bit of a resurgence in North America and we are in an excellent position to see it grow in Alberta.  As horsemen, all we have to do is put on a great show (which should be easy given our passion for what we do) and make the most of every opportunity to be a positive face of our sport.

Good luck and see you at the races!
